Toxins

We are surrounded by toxins in this modern world. They can impact our minds and our body.

Let’s discuss two types of toxins. One type is man-made and the other type is made by our own bodies.

The first type of toxins includes chemicals. These are artificially made and are abundant in our modern world. These chemicals get into our bodies through the air we breathe, the food we eat, the water we drink, drugs (over-the-counter, prescription, or recreational) we take, as any alcohol we consume.

The second type of toxins includes natural by-products of body processes or metabolism. So when you eat food, your body breaks the food down through metabolism and creates substances that may lead to toxicity for your body. This toxicity can occur in many ways but can be caused by food allergies or sensitivities.

The foods that most commonly cause symptoms of a food allergy or toxicity are gluten-containing grains, dairy products, eggs, soy, caffeine, yeast, sugar in its many forms, and dried fruits.

Although the body is designed to be self-cleaning and to excrete toxins, it cannot always handle the overload present in today’s environment. Chemicals not excreted - accumulate in our fat cells and cell membranes and become internal toxins.

When the body is under stress, it releases these internal toxins from the fat to circulate in the bloodstream. These toxins can damage the protective intestinal lining, literally corroding the body from the inside out. Thus making the intestinal lining a less effective filter for the good nutrients we might be bringing in. The more it is damaged, the less effectively it absorbs nutrients, and the more toxins pass into the blood and lymph systems.

If you don’t manage toxins you can get symptoms of toxic overload like headaches, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, belly bloat, fatigue, acne, joint & muscle aches, inability to concentrate, foggy brain, allergic reactions, and more.

Now, let me give you three tips for detoxing:

1. Drink enough water

The main role of the kidneys is to continuously filter our blood, remove toxins, and delicately balance the electrolyte and water balance of our blood.

Water helps create sufficient bowel movements that move toxins out. Insufficient water and fiber can lead to constipation which is a sign that your digestive system isn’t working optimally.

2. Eat more fiber.

Fiber helps bulk up stool and acts like a broom to brush toxins out of your system. If these toxins aren’t removed, they are re-adsorbed by the body.

Where do you find fiber? In plants. Animal products like meat, dairy like cheese, and eggs don’t have any fiber. So adding more fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes to your meals increases the fiber and thus will help with removing toxins.

3. Decrease toxins.

Reduce one of the likely foods that cause sensitivities like gluten-containing grains, dairy products, eggs, soy, caffeine, yeast, sugar in its many forms, and dried fruits.

Pick one type or group of toxins to eliminate for a week or 2 and see how you feel. The easiest is one of the foods you may be sensitive to. For the biggest impact on your toxic overload symptoms, I suggest a cleanse. On a cleanse you eat and drink as toxic-free as possible for a particular amount of time.

I did a Reset cleanse in November. And many of you know I’m plant-based so I was eating plenty of fiber. And I don’t eat a lot of processed foods but eliminating sugar was huge for me. I didn’t appreciate that the sugar hidden in everything made me quite snacky. The pandemic finally had me gaining weight and after the cleanse - I started to lose weight.

So, you can definitely research and do a cleanse on your own but I also offer a 21-day Reset Cleanse to guide people through a gentle cleanse with group coaching.

To determine if the 21-day Reset Cleanse is right for you, I offer a free Healthy Lifestyle Discovery Session where we can talk about the most effective way for you to get the results you want. This session is 60-minutes and allows us to focus on your individual needs in-depth.
