Matcha is powdered green tea.  It has become incredibly popular worldwide, but its roots go back centuries; with these versatile recipes modernizing an ancient tradition, we can all reap the health benefits from this naturally delicious food.

The consumption of green tea is associated with lower rates of heart attacks, strokes, and premature death.  According to Dr. Greger of NutritionFacts.org, it is one of the healthiest beverages, along with water and hibiscus tea.

Dr. Greger states, “Matcha is probably the healthiest way to drink green tea, since you’re drinking it as a whole food—whereas normally, you just make a hot water-green tea extract, and throw away the leaves. That’s like boiling some collard greens, and throwing away the greens, and just drinking the cooking water!”  Due to contamination, Dr. Greger recommends that your tea is sourced from Japan, rather than China.

There are so many inventive ways to prepare matcha that make it both enjoyable to consume and good for you. You can have matcha in your food like Dr. Greger, who loves Matcha Nice Cream

You can also enjoy its earthy flavor by simply whisking together matcha powder with a small amount of hot water in a bowl or making it like a latte, blending water with matcha powder and steaming the mixture until frothy. If you're looking for something cool and refreshing, try mixing matcha with cold water or almond milk for a delicious iced version.

Since matcha is pretty earthy you may need to pair it with some sweetener like the ripe bananas in nice cream or another sweetener.  In drinks monk fruit, stevia or agave are better for people looking to keep blood sugar impact low.  Monk fruit and stevia are better than agave for lower blood sugar impact.  If blood sugar impact isn’t an issue, then you could use honey or pure maple syrup can be added to make it a bit sweeter.
